Ashley Hutchings MBE, the Guv’nor of folk-rock and founder member of Britain’s much-loved and admired folk-rock group Fairport Convention, has put together a new and entertaining show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the group.
Titled The Beginnings of Fairport Convention, this words and music performance features Ashley and singer/guitarist Becky Mills.
Starting with Ashley’s 1967 diary entries which relate the forming of the group, the show continues with plenty of informative and often funny words and plenty of songs from the early days of Fairport, including many not on the first four Fairport album releases. Along the way a picture of the late sixties music scene in this country is vividly painted and The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix come into the story.
“Ashley Hutchings is the single most important figure in English folk rock. Before that his group Fairport Convention recorded some of the best versions of my unreleased songs. Listen to the bass playing on Percy’s Song to hear how great he is.” Bob Dylan.
